How to clean an ice cream spill off carpet or fabric furniture?

 

Nearly every child and adult kid at heart loves ice cream.  We especially do.

Over the 20 years we’ve been in business we’ve had SOS calls from our clients living in the Perth northern suburbs of Woodvale, Kingsley, Mindarie, Iluka, Duncraig, Scarborough to name a few, that have needed help with removing their child’s ice cream spills.

We’ve helped them, and now writing this blog, we hope to help you.

Removing Ice Cream Stains From Carpets & Furniture

Successfully removing any and all stains is down to several factors.

1.  Acting fast enough.
2. Using the right method
3. Understanding the actual content of spillage I.E Acid based or Alkaline.

So if any ice cream gets spilt on your carpets or fabric sofas, just follow the easy steps below:

WHAT YOU WILL NEED, YOU’LL LIKELY HAVE AT HOME IN YOUR LAUNDRY CUPBOARD ALREADY.

 

1. 500ml spray bottle with liquid soap and water mixture (two caps of liquid soap or dish wash liquid to 500ml of lukewarm water)
2. 500ml spray bottle of lukewarm water and white vinegar mix 60 ml vinegar to 500ml water)
3. Box of bicarbonate of soda (Largest one you can buy, as always handy)
4. Roll of white kitchen paper towel or clean white tissues
5. Rubber gloves
6. Blunt butter knife or dessert metal spoon.

Method

• Wearing rubber gloves, use a blunt butter knife or spoon and scrape up as much spill as possible without damaging the fibres.
• From the centre of the spill, spray on liberal amounts of soap & water mix, gently massaging into spill using the back of the spoon or your fingers. You should notice the spill loosen and start to break up.
• Absorb residue with white kitchen towel or tissues, making note of any residues still left.  Repeat process if necessary, until the area is looking clear.
• Continue absorbing until the area is just slightly damp.
• Now liberally spray the area with white vinegar & water mix. Do not saturate.  This will neutralise any alkaline residue left from the soap, stopping it from becoming sticky which will attract fine dust particles, giving you those dark ring areas.
• At this point absorb again residue with a white kitchen towel or tissues until slightly damp then sprinkle on bi-carb leaving it slightly mounded on fabric or carpet fibres.
• Leave 24 to 48 hours to dry out then simply vacuum off. You may need to agitate the bi-carb gently to break it up, then vacuum again.

FOOTNOTE

Not all fibres or fabrics respond the same, be sure to test first in an inconspicuous area to make sure the solution doesn’t harm the colour.
